The five days
Goodwood Cup
The stayers open the show. Two miles around the switchback is a supreme test of stamina and agility, and the Goodwood Cup has become the mid-summer championship for the division — the race Stradivarius made his own. Expect a tactical crawl or a war of attrition; there is rarely anything in between.
Sussex Stakes
The mile championship and the meeting’s glamour event. The Sussex is where the Classic generation meets the older milers for the first time each summer, and the roll of honour — Frankel twice, Alcohol Free, Paddington — reads like a history of the division. The best mile race run in Britain most years.
Nassau Stakes
Ladies’ Day belongs to the fillies and mares. Ten furlongs on this cambered, turning track rewards balance and a turn of foot, and the Nassau regularly produces the meeting’s classiest performance — Midday won it three times, Minding and Winter carried Classic form straight through it.
King George Stakes
Five furlongs, mostly downhill, gone in under a minute. The King George Stakes is the fastest race of the week — a pure speed dash where the start is everything and specialists like Battaash have made the race a personal fiefdom. Blink at the wrong moment and it is over.
Stewards’ Cup
The season’s most ferocious sprint handicap: around 28 runners charging six furlongs in two packs, with the draw, the pace map and the gambles all colliding at once. It is the hardest race of the summer to solve — which is exactly why the data below matters more here than anywhere else.

In Goodwood races up to 7.5 furlongs with 8 or more runners (43 races in our corpus), runners drawn low — near the stands' rail — win nearly three times as often as those drawn high. On Stewards' Cup day, the stall number is a form line in itself.
