Goodwood

Sussex Downs, West Sussex

The track

Goodwood is the sharp, undulating switchback of the Sussex Downs — a right-handed loop perched on a ridge 700 feet above the Channel, with a long downhill run and a pronounced camber that tips horses toward the far rail. Nothing about it is fair or flat: the field climbs, turns, and then plunges through the final three furlongs, and horses that cannot handle the gradients or lay up on the sharp home bend get found out quickly. Course form counts for more here than at almost any other Flat track in Britain, and so does the draw.
